the War Museum of Chania
The War Museum of Chania is housed in the Italian Barracks, a work of the Italian architect Macuzo (1870), next to the Public Garden. It is a branch of the War Museum of Athens.
The Historic Archives of Crete were founded in 1932. Its library comprises over 6500 books as well as very important documents from the Cretan rebellions of 1821, archives of the Cretan State as well as archives of civilians. It is one of the richest archive collections, second only to the General Archives of the State.
The rare photographic material and the unique historical heirlooms depict the incomparable participation of the Cretan Macedonian fighters (1903 – 1922) in the Balkan Wars (1912-13), the Asia Minor Campaign (1919-1922), World Wars I and II and during the German occupation (1941-1945). It also has a small collection of folkloric and historical material.
